Hot Tub Water Care, Made Simple
On mid and premium Hot Spring and Caldera spas, the FreshWater Salt System turns a little dissolved salt into just enough chlorine — water stays clean up to a year between refills — and FreshWater IQ adds hourly testing with a simple color status.
The number-one worry we hear from new hot-tub owners is water care. People picture a chemistry set and a weekly chore. On a modern Hot Spring or Caldera spa, the reality is much gentler than the reputation — especially if you pick the right system up front. Here's how it works, in plain terms.
The big idea: let the spa do the work
Older hot tubs made you the water-treatment plant. You measured and dosed chlorine by hand, week after week. Hot Spring and Caldera flip that. On mid and premium models, a FreshWater® Salt System turns a small amount of dissolved salt into just enough chlorine, on demand, from a replaceable titanium cartridge. You add far fewer chemicals, the water feels softer, and it stays clean up to a year before you drain and refill. One cartridge lasts about four months, so a three-pack covers roughly a year.
That's the whole philosophy: take things out of the water instead of pouring more things in.
The three tiers, from simple to hands-off
Hot Spring and Caldera water care comes in tiers, so you can match the system to how hands-off you want to be:
- FreshWater® Salt System — the foundation. Salt in, gentle chlorine out, softer water, far less dosing.
- + Smart Monitoring — a built-in sensor tests your water every hour and shows a simple Green / Yellow / Red status on the panel and the app. No guessing.
- + Dosing System — one tap dispenses the exact amount of pH Up, pH Down, or Phosphate Remover. No measuring cups.
All three together are sold as FreshWater® IQ: clean, balanced, natural-feeling water for up to a full year, with the spa doing the testing and most of the correcting.
On entry, plug-and-play spas (Hot Spring Freeflow, Caldera Fantasy), water care uses simple FROG® mineral-plus-chlorine cartridges instead of a salt cell. The Vigor and Emerge cold plunges are different again: a built-in UV-C light sanitizes the water as it circulates, and you add a small amount of granular chlorine each week — no salt cell, and never a cartridge or floater.
The water care routine
Even on a salt system, there's a light rhythm to keep:
- Every ten days or so: test the water, nudge the balance if needed, and confirm the system is holding its chlorine target. The panel even reminds you on a 10-day timer.
- Filters: clean or replace on schedule. Clean filters quietly do a lot of the work.
- A few times a year: a full drain-and-refill. Salt and smart systems stretch the time between these out considerably.
That's it. Test strip in the water, glance at the color status, tap if something's off. Most owners are surprised how little it adds up to.
A common headache: "chlorine lock"
If you ever see clear water but no chlorine reading day after day, the usual culprit is too much stabilized granular chlorine ("dichlor"). It builds up cyanuric acid, which binds your chlorine — often after someone tried to help by dumping in more. The fix is a drain-and-refill. The prevention is to let the salt system do its job and use its Boost setting after heavy use instead of reaching for the chlorine bucket. When in doubt, ask us. We'd rather you call than guess.
