Sauna Buying Guide: Infrared, Traditional, Hybrid & Outdoor

4 min read  ·  Hot Tubs Northwest

The short answer

Start with heat type — it shapes everything: traditional (rock and steam, about 180–200°F), infrared (gentler, about 120–140°F, often 120V plug-in), or hybrid (both). Tylö makes all three, plus the outdoor-rated Lulea line.

A home sauna is one of the most rewarding wellness additions you can make. It's also one of the easiest to get wrong if you skip the first decision: heat type. That one choice changes the experience, the install, and the cost. The good news is that Tylö, the brand we carry, makes every style — so you can choose by what you want, not by what one maker happens to sell. Here's how to decide.

Start here: the three kinds of heat

This is the central choice, so lead with it:

  • Want the authentic, high-heat steam ritual — water poured over hot rocks? → Traditional.
  • Want gentle, lower-temperature warmth for frequent, longer sessions, with the easiest install? → Infrared. (Often it just plugs into a standard outlet.)
  • Split household, or you want both? → Hybrid.

Size and seating

Match the room to how you'll use it:

  • 1–2 person — compact, fits tight spaces. The infrared Kiruna 1 plugs into a standard outlet.
  • 3–4 person — wraparound benches, room to lie down, social or family use.

More seats means more space, more power, and a longer heat-up. Like everything in this category, size to real use, not the maximum.

Indoor or outdoor?

Indoor is the default. If you want an outdoor sauna, it has to be built for it. Tylö's Lulea line has insulated walls, a steel roof, weather-sealed wood, and larger clearances. Don't put an indoor-rated cabin outside. Match the model to the location.

Power and install

  • Infrared (Kiruna): commonly a standard 120V plug-in — the single easiest install of anything we carry.
  • Traditional / Hybrid: a dedicated 240V circuit sized to the heater, installed by a licensed electrician. Small 120V traditional models exist too (like the Halmstad 2).
  • Floor and ventilation: a level, moisture-appropriate floor; traditional saunas need ventilation for airflow and moisture.

Two touches worth knowing: Tylö's ThermoSafe™ heater coating keeps side panels cooler to the touch, so no bulky guard is needed and you keep the legroom. And the smart controls (Bliss™ for traditional/hybrid, Aspire™ for infrared) offer Wi-Fi remote start, so you can pre-heat the room before you walk out to it.

A word on infrared and EMF

If you're comparing infrared saunas, you'll see "low-EMF" claims. Here's the straight version: Tylö markets its CarbonFlex® panels as low-EMR/EF. We'll tell you what the brand states, and we won't invent numbers. If you specifically want independent, published EMF lab figures, some infrared-only specialist brands publish those — and we'll say so honestly. Tylö's edge is different: authentic steam, a genuine hybrid option, and over a century of sauna building, all from one brand.

What a sauna does for you

Saunas are associated with relaxation, a satisfying sweat, and post-exercise recovery. Consistent heat can help you unwind, and many users find it helps them wind down toward more restful sleep. The warmth supports circulation and eases muscle tension after a workout. Keep the frame right, though: a sauna is a wellness product, not a medical treatment.

A safety word: hydrate before and after, and start with shorter sessions. If you're pregnant or have a cardiovascular condition, talk to your doctor before regular high-heat sauna use. This is general wellness information, not medical advice.
