Swim Spas Explained: Is an Endless Pools Swim Spa Right for You?

4 min read  ·  Hot Tubs Northwest

The short answer

An Endless Pools swim spa is a compact fitness system you swim in place against a smooth, adjustable current — usable year-round, in far less space than a pool, with low-impact fitness and warm-water recovery built in.

A swim spa confuses a lot of first-time shoppers, and that's fair. It looks like a big hot tub, but it's really a different product: a compact fitness and wellness system you can swim in, that fits where a pool never could and works all year. Here's what it is, what it does, and how to tell if it's right for you.

What a swim spa is

A swim spa is a self-contained vessel, usually 12 to 20 feet long, that generates a current you swim against in place. No flip turns, no lap counting, no pool membership. You set a pace and swim continuously, held in one spot by a smooth, adjustable current.

The current is the heart of the product, and there are two approaches:

  • Propeller-driven (Endless Pools Hydrodrive™, on the E-Series) moves a large volume of water for a smooth, bubble-free current "wider than your body and deeper than your stroke." This is the strongest, smoothest, most genuinely swim-able option.
  • Airless jets (Endless Pools SwimCross® on the X-Series and RecSport® on the R-Series) create scalable resistance, tuned for fitness and recreation respectively.

Here's what shoppers miss: with a current, smoothness and adjustability matter more than raw power. A turbulent, bubbly current is hard to swim against. A smooth one lets you hold your form. Try a current before you buy — it tells you more than any spec sheet.

What people use them for

Endless Pools swim spas are built around use, not just swimming:

  • Swim training at home. Any distance, at your own pace.
  • Low-impact fitness. Aquatic walking and jogging, resistance work, and on equipped E-Series models an Underwater Treadmill / Hydrostride™ for walking or running in cushioned water.
  • Rehab, mobility, and recovery. The same buoyancy and warmth used in aquatic physical therapy — gentle on joints, and a good fit for older adults or training around an injury.
  • Family fun. A shared space to play and exercise in far less yard than a pool.

Water carries most of your body weight, so everything you do in it is low-impact. Easy on knees, joints, and the spine. (As always: this is wellness, not medical treatment. If you're rehabbing a specific condition, check with a professional.)

Swim and soak at the same time

Some models settle the "exercise or relax?" question by doing both. Dual-temperature models — the E2000 and X2000 — run an independent swim zone and spa zone at different temperatures at once. Train in cooler water, then step over to warm hydromassage seats to recover. Nothing has to reheat. Single-zone models heat the whole vessel to one temperature.

Swim spa vs. a traditional pool

This is the comparison most people are really making:

  • Footprint and cost. A swim spa fits where a pool can't, and costs less to buy, run, and maintain.
  • Year-round use. Heated and covered, it works in winter — when most pools are closed.
  • The trade-off. You swim in place against a current rather than doing open laps. Ideal for fitness, training, and recovery. Less so for a big-group open swim.

A fair summary: all the swimming and fitness, a fraction of the yard, every season.

Which Endless Pools series fits

  • Serious swimming and trainingE-Series (Hydrodrive™). Strongest, smoothest, treadmill-ready. The E2000 adds dual-temp and the most length.
  • Fitness and recovery, great current, smart budgetX-Series (SwimCross®).
  • Family fun and all-level fitness at the best priceR-Series (RecSport®).
  • A tight, roughly 12-foot space → R200 or R220.

One planning note: swim spas are bigger and heavier than hot tubs. They need a dedicated 240V circuit and an engineered, load-rated pad — often reinforced concrete — and they're frequently crane-set into place. Plan the foundation early. It's the most common surprise. (Full detail in our site-prep guide.)
