Hot Tub Electrical Requirements, Explained
Plug-and-play spas run on a standard grounded 110–120V outlet with no electrician. Full-size spas need a dedicated 240V GFCI circuit, commonly 50A, installed by a licensed electrician and inspected before delivery.
Every hot tub needs power, and the electrical work is the part of the install people most often plan last — which makes it the part most likely to delay a delivery. The requirements are simpler than they sound. Here they are in plain English, so you know what your home needs before the spa arrives.
What electrical does a hot tub need?
It depends on which of two camps the spa is in:
- Plug-and-play spas — the entry rotomold models (Hot Spring Freeflow, Caldera Fantasy) — run on a standard grounded 110–120V household outlet. If you have an outlet near the site, the electrical is done.
- Full-size spas — Hot Spring's Highlife, Limelight, and Hot Spot lines and Caldera's Utopia, Paradise, and Vacanza series — run on a dedicated 240V GFCI circuit, commonly 50A, hardwired by a licensed electrician, usually with a GFCI subpanel near the spa.
You'll see 240V written as "220V" in older articles and forum posts. Same circuit; 240V is the correct modern term.
Do you need an electrician to install a hot tub?
For a plug-and-play spa, no — no electrician, no new circuit, no permit for one. That simplicity is most of what the plug-and-play category is for.
For a full-size spa, yes: a licensed electrician installs the dedicated circuit and subpanel, and the work gets permitted and inspected. It's a one-time job, and it's what lets the heater and jets run at full strength together. What is a GFCI, and why does a hot tub need one?
GFCI stands for ground-fault circuit interrupter — the safety device that cuts power almost instantly if electricity strays anywhere it shouldn't. Around water, that protection is non-negotiable, which is why it's built into the requirement: plug-and-play spas ship with GFCI protection in the cord, and full-size spas get it in the dedicated circuit or subpanel your electrician installs.
When should the electrical work happen?
Before delivery — that's the whole trick. Have the circuit roughed in and inspected before the spa arrives, so the crew can set the spa and power it the same day. The sequence that works: pick the model (which sets the electrical requirement), plan the site, then book the electrician ahead of the delivery date. One planning note: a few of the smaller convertible models (certain Caldera Vacanza spas) can run on either 115V or 230V, which lets you start on an outlet and add the dedicated circuit later. For everything else, the spa's power is fixed — plan for what the model needs.
